EAST Surrey patients will have to travel to Crawley to be examined by a new, hi-tech mammography machine.

Health bosses have officially announced they are purchasing the new machine which will be based at Crawley Hospital but also used by patients sent from East Surrey Hospital.

The machine, which checks for lumps to help early detection of cancer, was purchased by Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust and the Friends of Crawley Hospital.

It will replace the current film machines at both Crawley and East Surrey, which are reaching the end of their working lives.

The new X-ray machine will allow for an improved workflow, so more patients can be seen.

The machine will allow for imaging and diagnosis in one day, which GPs say is of great benefit to patients.

Adrian Ball, lead consultant for cancer services at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “We receive a lot of positive feedback from patients and GPs about the one-stop breast cancer service at Crawley Hospital and this new machine will certainly enhance that service.”

Crawley-based Charity Outreach 3 Way supports people with learning difficulties in three main areas: work, home and leisure. Their Work Matters and Work Aid initiatives aim to help people gain the confidence and skills they need to work. The new premises in Ifield are an ideal base for the charity’s two pathways to work experience which both focus on building confidence and self esteem as well as skills.
Through Work Matters, people with additional needs can experience paid work in a safe, supportive workshop environment. Work Aid is a national initiative through which individuals are matched up with work or volunteering placements. Mayor of Crawley Cllr Brenda Burgess and Laura Moffatt MP supported the event at Alpine Works in Oak Road.

Outreach 3 Way’s Chief Executive Catherine Sweeney said, “It is fantastic to have support from our Mayor and MP, who recognise the value of the work we do supporting adults with learning difficulties to join the world of work.”

The premises have been freshly decorated, thanks to volunteers from local recycling company MNH. MNH offers recycling services to the airline industry and is a “positive about disabled people” accredited company. MNH have worked with Work Matters for ten years, and presented Outreach 3 Way charity with a plaque marking this milestone at the official opening.

Head of Outreach 3 Way Day Services Trixie Hewitt commented, “We really value the great working partnership we have with MNH. We welcome enquiries from other local companies who may want to use our services. These include packing, sorting, collating and recycling.”

The Work Matters service can be a useful bolt-on labour resource for companies who need help with time-consuming piece work such as sorting or recycling. Choosing Work Matters also helps businesses connect with the local community and meet Corporate Social Responsibility goals. Businesses that would like to get involved should call Trixie on 01293 655456 to find out more.
