The men in moustaches are taking over!

All around you, men are growing moustaches for charity. Ok, it’s not exactly a difficult challenge, but the reason behind is very serious.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

Some statistics for you…

The rate of cancer diagnoses in men is considerably higher than the rate in women.

In every 100,000 men there will be 417 cases diagnosed, compared to 366 cases per 100,000 females.

Evidence suggests that about a third (39%) of 12 common cancers in the UK could be prevented through diet, physical activity and body weight.

1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

In 2008 37,051 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed and 10,168 men died.

Testicular cancer in the UK affects younger men between the ages of 20 and 50. 1,990 men were diagnosed with the disease in 2007.

I will be joining the army of men across the country in an effort to raise these much needed funds and am campaigning to raise as much money as possible. Even though you may not know me, you may wish to still donate to this very worthy cause. Please visit my Movember page at http://www.mobro.co/rogermayne in order to leave your donation, and I will respond to each and every contributor.

Whilst campaigning for sponsorship, I was sent the following letter. The author would like to remain anonymous, but it highlights the effects of prostate cancer.

Written by “The Idiot”

Hi Guys,

Over the past 15 months I have made a point of talking about Prostate Cancer with as many blokes as possible. Although most will say they are aware of the potential problem, some even have known of friends who have suffered and died, very few (none) have actually done anything to ensure they are not/will not be victims’

I sincerely hope the following real life experience will make every one of you get down the doctors for a PSA blood test. Yes that is all it takes a simple blood test not even the greased finger up the jacksy. The average PSA is 4 when I finally stopped being a bloody idiot and got tested mine was an alarm bell ringing 26.

Prostate Cancer is one of the easiest to diagnose and treat yet it (2008 figures) kills 10,168 men it that year, that’s 12% of all male cancers deaths and is only 2nd to lung cancer. Do the sums and that is one bloke dying every hour.

The main reason for the high mortality rate being that so many blokes are complete idiots (like myself) and don’t take note/do something at the first warning signs.

What is the Prostate –?
It is a walnut sized thing that the pee tube from the bladder passes through to exit at the willy. The two sperm tubes from the balls also join the pee tube in the prostate (sorry about the technical jargon). You could call it the Clapham Junction for all routes to the willy.

What are the warning signs-?
Loss of pressure when having a pee
Frequent need to have a pee
Only being able to manage a dribble each time – I became over a period of 12 months a dab hand at jumping into the back of the cab and having to have a dribble into a bottle between jobs, sometime twice an hour.
Reduced ability to ejaculate or not being able to ejaculate. I blamed the wife for this one and how wrong was I.

Well after some 18 months of ignoring all the warning signs – doing that blokish thing and just finding ways round the problem to compensate for the bloody obvious. It all came to a climax when walking back to the cab after having a coffee with my accountant (we all have to see them once a year) the front of my jeans suddenly became quite warm and a darker shade than normal. On arriving home my wife (a quiet person by nature) went bloody ballistic and in no uncertain terms told me to “get down the doctors and get myself sorted out.

Next day she went of to work I now had two choices, make that appointment or spend the whole day (in-between umpteen visits to the toilet) removing every ornament (potential missile) to the garden shed.

Off to the docs I went and suddenly found myself caught up in the fantastic machine that is our National Health Service. Had an urgent blood test, appointment with a consultant at East Surrey Hospital within days and the operation called a TURP a few days later.

It turned out it was not a case of not being able to hold me water but that I could hold it better than most. My prostate had squeezed my pee tube to a virtual closure so my bladder had to be full to bursting (which it came very close to doing) before a dribble could get passed.

The TURP in short is drilling a bigger hole through the prostate so I can now pee like a horse and go several hours without needing the loo. However it did bugger up the plumbing from the testicles a bit. After a week or so I just had to try the ejaculation stuff out. Well it responded all the sensations were there and so was that final relief satisfaction. But no ejaculation as it all back flushed up into the bladder, hey ho sex without the mess could save a fortune on boxes of tissues.

How much of an idiot was I?

Due to my own stupidity the cancer had burst out of the prostate and into the lymph nodes below so now I have been on female hormone implants for 14 months. That’s chemical castration (so no tissues required) menopausal hot flushes (still waiting for that female ability to multitask – think it is a myth). Due to start radio therapy on the 18th that’s then every day Mon-Fri for two months.

I can only blame myself for being so stupid WHO are you going to blame as some 50% of blokes will experience some form of prostate problem.

I do not want to receive any sympathy replies; I am quite capable of crying in my own beer. What I would really like is to hear that every male member has booked that blood test. Don’t be a bloody idiot.

BTW at no time did I experience (after the trip to the docs) any pain so relax it may be a tender and much loved part of you so take care of it.

The aim of Movember is to raise awareness, and I sincerely hope that this letter above does exactly that. I’m sure that you will encounter a “MoBro” or “MoSista” this month, which is great, but if you’d like to donate, please visit my Movember page and support everyone involved.

Thank you.

There are many different exercises to get a flat stomach. Some require machines or special equipment; others simply require a floor to lie on and a little motivation and determination. There are some that are performed while also exercising other groups of muscles such as in Pilates moves, where every exercise will work the stomach muscles even if the focus is the legs, arms or other area of the body.

There are a couple of movements that are very basic and yet give many people the results they are looking for. The first movement is the basic crunch. These exercises are better for the body then sit ups because they do not strain the back as much. A crunch is performed simply by lying on your back and raising the upper portion of your body a few inches off the ground, just enough to feel the strain in the stomach muscles. The key to these movements is to be sure your stomach is doing the work and not your head, or arms. Also, it is important to keep everything straight, do not lift the head more then the shoulders or back, for more information and detail on performing this movement properly there are many resources available on the internet, in books and also in videos. Another movement which is also great and should be done in conjunction with the basic crunch is a side crunch which works the oblique, or as some people call them “love handles” This exercises are performed the same way as the crunch, only the body is twisted slightly to one side. Again to get a more accurate description of how to properly perform this movement there are many resources available.

Along with working out the mid section of the stomach and sides, a person should include several different exercises to get a flat stomach by way of exercising the whole stomach, which includes the lower section and upper section of their stomach as well. It will do a person no good to only focus on one specific muscle group of their stomach. There are many places to find exercises to get a flat stomach including the internet, library, book store and in videos. With so many different options a person may have trouble deciding which exercises would benefit them the most while trying to get a flat stomach. The best suggestion in this case is to try several different ones and decide what works for the individual. One exercise may work great for one person, but be too strenuous for another. Or, one person may be in better shape and be able to do several different exercises that a beginner can not do, at least in the beginning and may just need to concentrate on one movement, instead of a series of different movements in one workout session.

While some exercises to get a flat stomach may work better then others, no exercise will work if not properly performed and done regularly. A person should decide which exercises they are both capable of doing and also can do for an extended period of time while working to get the flat stomach they want. If they exercise is too complicated, takes too much time or can only be done on a special type of equipment, the person may not be able to stick with it long term. Remember, getting a flat stomach will not happen overnight, it takes time, dedication and patience, regardless of the exercise used.

Sussex remains one of the most popular and visited counties in the UK. With so many varied things to see and do, it's never been a better time to visit the beauty of Britain's South Coast.

Holidays that put you in control

The thought of taking a nice, quiet break somewhere can often seem quite appealing, especially when exploring parts of England previously unvisited. However, check-ins, organised tours, group outings and timetables for every day can quickly turn a relaxing break into feeling like a rushed school-trip.

The ideal solution to remedy this problem is to take a self-catering holiday, where you are in control of where you go, what things you do and what time you come and go. With an array of apartments, houses and cottages to suit every requirement, taking a short break in beautiful Sussex has never been easier, more affordable, or more appealing!

Sussex Downs

Sussex is home to the South Downs, showcasing some of England’s finest scenery, ranging from beautiful countryside to spectacular cliffs and coastlines. Beachy Head possesses some of the most tranquil and breathtaking coastal scenery that the county has to offer and offers visitors a truly unique walk.

Devils Dyke is another area of outstanding beauty. Britain’s finest Anglo-Saxon earthwork of its kind runs for nearly eight miles presenting an awe-inspiring countryside walk that has been trodden for centuries.

These are simply two examples of the broad spectrum of country walks, pubs, sights and views available along the South Downs Way, and make up part of a rural heritage that can’t all be appreciated in just the one visit!

History and Culture

If you’re looking for a more historical day out, why not visit one of Sussex’s several famous castles or forts? Bodium and Arundel castles are two prime examples of majestic buildings brimming with history, beauty and plenty of things to do, all set within beautiful rural areas and villages.

Hastings offers a glimpse into English history having hosted quite an event in 1066. The battle is chronicled in museums, buildings and the battlefield itself, with plenty of opportunities for visitors to complete the whole 1066 experience.

Sussex’s beautiful countryside is home to and indeed inspires, many talented artists. The county boasts many galleries, ranging from large, exhibition-hosting venues down to small village outlets where local craftspeople hang their wares. If you’re looking for history and culture, then look no further than Sussex and the English coast.

Eating

What holiday would be complete without food and drink? Taking a self-catering holiday home affords you the luxury of substituting mediocre hotel cuisine for award-winning local restaurants and local produce.

If you fancy a quiet night in, there is an abundance of quality locally farmed produce available throughout Sussex’s towns and villages. If a night of wining and dining suits your fancy, then there is a simply limitless array of options to suit even the most discerning taste-buds, whether it’s a local eatery showcasing the best in home-grown and local cuisine or a range of cosmopolitan fine restaurants located in a city. Sussex boasts all of these, as well as some of the finest fish restaurants available on England’s coastline.

Urban Chic

With all of the rural countryside and natural beauty of Sussex, it’s easy to forget that we’re also home to Brighton, one of the country’s most cosmopolitan and fashionable cities. Brighton has excellent transport links to most places in the county and offers a wealth of sights, sounds and activities for your holiday.

Brighton is home to some of the most varied and interesting shops, boutiques and markets in the south of England. The Laines offer a truly unique and independent range of shops, stalls and restaurants which are packed full of colour, character and charm, ensuring that you’ll definitely find something to take back your friends, and plenty more besides!

Brighton Marina naturally affords people boating access, whilst a casino and several restaurants have made this part of the city a very glamorous night out. From yacht hotels to moorings for your own vessel, the Marina offers yet further options to your holiday experience.

Add to this a huge shopping centre, great restaurants and a fantastic array of pubs, bars and nightlife, and you’re never short of somewhere to go or something to do, all within cosmopolitan Brighton!

Accommodation

The final piece of your holiday jigsaw falls into place with the selection of accommodation. The best way to explore our vast and beautiful county is at your own leisure, and nothing offers you this freedom like a self-catering holiday home. There are a broad range of cottages, houses and apartments based in a variety of locations to suit your needs exactly, and ensure that your holiday in Sussex is enjoyed exactly how and where you want it to be.

A lot of people go to Sussex to see the vineyards, but there’s more to the area that that. You can also examine many of the historic houses that the area has to offer. You’ll want to visit Great Dixter House and Gardens, Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens, and Batemans if you’re looking for history. Architects, authors, and many other famous people had homes in Sussex at one time or another, and many of those homes are still there. Some have been turned into bed and breakfast type establishments, some have been preserved as small museums, and some are still around and still being lived in.

In and around Sussex, though, there are a lot of these historic homes, and if you like history and architecture you’ll want to take a look at these homes and enjoy learning about them and the people who used to live in them. Rudyard Kipling had a home in Sussex, as did many other people whose names would be recognized quite easily. When you go to Sussex to see these homes, though, be sure to pay attention to the time of year and weather conditions that are to be expected. You don’t want to go looking around at these sites when it’s raining on you or the weather is very cold, so you’ll have to plan accordingly.

If you do go to Sussex in the off season, though, you’ll find that the prices that you’ll be seeing are better than they would be if you went when the weather was perfect and all of the tourists were there. You should consider weather, prices, and crowds in your holiday planning, but these things will matter more to some people than they do to others, so don’t let others’ perceptions of when you should plan your trip stop you from going to see the historic Sussex homes when you want to. You can take your family or a group of friends, and Sussex overall is friendly to tourists and to families with children, so don’t worry about bringing a large group of people or taking the baby along.

Everyone in your group will enjoy seeing the historic houses in and around Sussex, so you don’t need to be concerned that they’ll get bored or that they won’t have anything to do. Everyone can find something about Sussex that they love, from the historic houses to the vineyards to the great accommodations to the wonderful food and kind, caring people.

Anyone who’s been to Sussex knows there’s a lot to do there, and all kinds of things to see. If you’re new to vacationing in the area, you might want to take the time to talk to the locals and see what they suggest. They can come up with suggestions that you might not have thought about or known about through other means.

The Coast and The Seaside

When you visit Sussex, be sure to visit the coast and enjoy the seaside. There are beaches you can stroll on, surf you can play in, and miles and miles of rugged coastline to explore. No matter what you’re looking for – rugged beauty or a place to put your toes in the sand – you can find it along the coast of Sussex. Just be sure to book early in the busy season, so you don’t miss out on some great accommodation and prices.

The Countryside and the Downs

If you’re not interested in the seashore, or if you want to see more than just the coastline, you can move a little further inland and enjoy the downs and the countryside. That’s a great way for you to see all kinds of native plants and animals, which means that you can learn a lot in a way that makes things a lot of fun. Learning doesn’t have to be boring, and the breathtaking beauty of the area makes it a great place to explore and enjoy.

Historic Houses and Mansions

In addition to the coastline and the countryside, there are buildings to appreciate. Many historic mansions, houses, and other structures are seen in Sussex, and those houses belonged to aristocrats, writers, artists, and others. They’re worth seeing and they have a lot of history in them. There are museums, too, where you can see more of the history of the Sussex area and what’s happened during its growth and development.

If you plan on visiting Sussex, make sure that you pay attention to the time of year that you’re going. Some times are better for the weather than others, and if you book early you could save yourself a lot of money in transportation and lodging costs. That’s important to know, and something worth thinking about when it comes to what time of year you want to visit. If you get a good deal you can stay longer and see all the attractions, instead of needing to leave early because of the cost.

Sussex is a picturesque county in South East England bordered by Surrey to the North, Kent to the East, Hampshire to the West and coastline to the South. For local Government purposes, it is divided into East and West Sussex. The major geographical feature of both East and West Sussex are the South Downs, set to become a National Park this year. The South Downs extend about 70 miles, providing stunning scenery for walking, horse-riding, para-gliding and mountain biking. The scenery has been the subject of many a poem including those by Rudyard Kipling, Hilaire Belloc and Francis William Bourdillon.

Housing in the area is some of the most sought after in the UK – indeed some of the nation’s most famous faces such as Anita Roddick, Leo Sayer, Jon Snow, Simon Callow and Steve Coogan reside in Sussex. New homes and character properties are both available in the county to suit all tastes and requirements. Popular new developments include the Church Marks Green build, providing new homes in East Sussex. The county of Sussex is full of notable towns and villages with a variety of architecture and historical references. Most popular places to live in the County include:

Arundel lying in West Sussex, 18 miles East of Brighton. The most prominent feature of the town is its restored medieval castle, originating from 1068 during the reign of William the Conqueror. Arundel is also known for its plethora of antique shops and as a popular televison venue – it has been used to portray Windsor Castle in Doctor Who, The Young Victoria and The Madness of King George.

Brighton is a seaside city on the coast of East Sussex. As well as its thriving culture, Brighton is best known for its West Pier, Royal Pavillion, beaches and infamous shopping lanes which are perhaps the best venue for shopping outside of London. Every May, the city hosts the Brighton Festival – the largest arts festival in the UK after Edinburgh’s.

Chichester is a cathedral city in West Sussex and is the centre for culture in the region, with a Festival Theatre and numerous art galleries. Nearby, Chichester Harbour provides excellent opportunities for watersports. The city was built inside Roman Walls and houses the Chichester Cross in its centre – a one time market site, standing at the intersection of the four main roads of the city. Like Brighton, Chichester is a thriving shopping venue with a strong cafe culture.

Midhurst is a small market town rated the second best town in England by Country Life magazine. Despite its small size, Midhurst houses the estate of Cowdray Park, one of the most premier polo venues in the world, hosting the international Veuve Cliquot Gold Cup every summer. The town has a Tudor heart with the circa 1430 Spread Eagle Hotel having accommodated Queen Elizabeth I. The town also holds the ruins of one of England’s great houses; although ravaged by fire, the ruins have been re-opened to the public following a major preservation project and provide a romantic backdrop to the polo grounds.

From roughing it to full 5 star luxury…campsites in Sussex are available to suit all tastes; the one thing you can be sure of is that you will wake to beautiful views in glorious countryside.

Pick your site, pitch your tent and enjoy!

Land-owners and farmers do not welcome uninvited guests, and the South Downs National Park discourages camping on the Downs, so, while you may prefer to go ‘au naturel’ and camp wild without the benefits of a recognised campsite, consider first these Sussex sites, which are rustic, rural and feel relatively remote. Some keen campers are not keen on caravans and all the paraphernalia that accompanies them, so the focus here is on campsites which deliver in terms of location, comfortable simplicity and peace.

Foxhole Campsite

Foxhole campsite and camping barn are situated in the most stunning location, in a fold in the Downs in the Seven Sisters Country Park, at the edge of the famous chalk cliffs. Within a few minutes’ walk of the wild Cuckmere Haven beach and nature reserve, this has to be one of the loveliest settings for a campsite in the whole of Sussex. Open from the beginning of April until the end of October, and with accommodation for just 20 small tents, it is essential to book in advance. Foxhole has basic facilities only.

Remember your torch, as the walk back from any of several local pubs after dark could be a little treacherous: the tidal River Ouse flows through the park to the sea, and has created several ox-bow lakes en route. Sheep and wildlife abound; this area is a bird-watcher’s paradise… it’s pretty wonderful for the rest of us, too.

Keen to be green? Travel by train to Seaford, via Lewes if you’re coming from London. Opposite the station take the 12, 12A or 13 bus to Exceat, then walk through the country park, bearing left at the sign.

Wowo Campsite

‘Peace, quiet, the beauty of nature and the ability to have a fire’ are the features that the owners of Wowo advertise as their site’s best selling points; add to these benefits, free camping for bongo-free musicians on Friday nights (performance around the campfire an essential requisite), the proximity of the Bluebell Line Steam Train Station and some fantastic local pubs, and you have a dream of a location in the heart of the Sussex Weald. If you’re keen to be green the nearest train station is at Haywards Heath (London to Brighton line), where you can catch a bus to near the site.

Blackberry Wood Campsite

Proud of the compliment that their campsite is ‘the coolest site in the UK’, the owners of Blackberry Wood have created a natural haven of twenty individual ‘woodland glade’ pitches in the lee of the Sussex South Downs. Although they don’t accept caravans, campervans or trailer-tents, they do have an interesting selection of gypsy and retro caravans, as well as an old red bus available to rent – a particularly attractive option during the colder months. Fires, barbecues and well-behaved dogs are all allowed. There’s also a shop on site, which hires out mountain bikes.

From Blackberry Wood, the pubs, shops, Post Office and museum at nearby Ditchling are all within easy reach, by foot, bike or car. The old Sussex market town of Lewes is little more than 10 minutes away (by car) and Brighton about twenty minutes, although you’d be better off leaving the car behind and taking the train from Hassocks. There are many more great places to go camping in Sussex. So, pick your site, pitch your tent and enjoy!

A wedding in Sussex is a great wedding! Vibrant towns and cities, spectacular coastlines and delightful countryside, just a few reasons why Sussex is an ideal place to get married!

Both East and West Sussex provide perfect locations for couples wishing to tie the knot in the UK. Not only are there stunning wedding venues but some of the best professional wedding suppliers are located in Sussex.

The first step in arranging and organising your wedding in Sussex is to choose a venue for your wedding ceremony. You should ask and find out whether the venue has a license and thus is approved for holding wedding ceremonies.

Secondly, decide on a wedding reception venue. Large cities such as Brighton, Crawley and Chichester offer great places for both the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception afterwards. Or why not look for a place outside of town in a more rural area. The gorgeous Sussex countryside offers an abundance of such locations, which would make your wedding reception in Sussex truly memorable.

Finally, you need to start organising the rest of your wedding. Search the internet and look at local newspapers and magazines for local Sussex wedding suppliers. Sussex has a great track record for providing great suppliers of wedding cakes, bridal dresses, wedding videographers and photographers, wedding entertainment etc etc. Whatever you need for your wedding you will find it in Sussex!

Undoubtedly, Sussex is an ideal place to get married in the UK. With great transport links, (e.g. Gatwick Airport, National Rail Links, Motorways), awesome wedding venues and brilliant wedding professionals you should not turn down the chance to get married in this great county!
