The men in moustaches are taking over!

All around you, men are growing moustaches for charity. Ok, it’s not exactly a difficult challenge, but the reason behind is very serious.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

Some statistics for you…

The rate of cancer diagnoses in men is considerably higher than the rate in women.

In every 100,000 men there will be 417 cases diagnosed, compared to 366 cases per 100,000 females.

Evidence suggests that about a third (39%) of 12 common cancers in the UK could be prevented through diet, physical activity and body weight.

1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

In 2008 37,051 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed and 10,168 men died.

Testicular cancer in the UK affects younger men between the ages of 20 and 50. 1,990 men were diagnosed with the disease in 2007.

I will be joining the army of men across the country in an effort to raise these much needed funds and am campaigning to raise as much money as possible. Even though you may not know me, you may wish to still donate to this very worthy cause. Please visit my Movember page at http://www.mobro.co/rogermayne in order to leave your donation, and I will respond to each and every contributor.

Whilst campaigning for sponsorship, I was sent the following letter. The author would like to remain anonymous, but it highlights the effects of prostate cancer.

Written by “The Idiot”

Hi Guys,

Over the past 15 months I have made a point of talking about Prostate Cancer with as many blokes as possible. Although most will say they are aware of the potential problem, some even have known of friends who have suffered and died, very few (none) have actually done anything to ensure they are not/will not be victims’

I sincerely hope the following real life experience will make every one of you get down the doctors for a PSA blood test. Yes that is all it takes a simple blood test not even the greased finger up the jacksy. The average PSA is 4 when I finally stopped being a bloody idiot and got tested mine was an alarm bell ringing 26.

Prostate Cancer is one of the easiest to diagnose and treat yet it (2008 figures) kills 10,168 men it that year, that’s 12% of all male cancers deaths and is only 2nd to lung cancer. Do the sums and that is one bloke dying every hour.

The main reason for the high mortality rate being that so many blokes are complete idiots (like myself) and don’t take note/do something at the first warning signs.

What is the Prostate –?
It is a walnut sized thing that the pee tube from the bladder passes through to exit at the willy. The two sperm tubes from the balls also join the pee tube in the prostate (sorry about the technical jargon). You could call it the Clapham Junction for all routes to the willy.

What are the warning signs-?
Loss of pressure when having a pee
Frequent need to have a pee
Only being able to manage a dribble each time – I became over a period of 12 months a dab hand at jumping into the back of the cab and having to have a dribble into a bottle between jobs, sometime twice an hour.
Reduced ability to ejaculate or not being able to ejaculate. I blamed the wife for this one and how wrong was I.

Well after some 18 months of ignoring all the warning signs – doing that blokish thing and just finding ways round the problem to compensate for the bloody obvious. It all came to a climax when walking back to the cab after having a coffee with my accountant (we all have to see them once a year) the front of my jeans suddenly became quite warm and a darker shade than normal. On arriving home my wife (a quiet person by nature) went bloody ballistic and in no uncertain terms told me to “get down the doctors and get myself sorted out.

Next day she went of to work I now had two choices, make that appointment or spend the whole day (in-between umpteen visits to the toilet) removing every ornament (potential missile) to the garden shed.

Off to the docs I went and suddenly found myself caught up in the fantastic machine that is our National Health Service. Had an urgent blood test, appointment with a consultant at East Surrey Hospital within days and the operation called a TURP a few days later.

It turned out it was not a case of not being able to hold me water but that I could hold it better than most. My prostate had squeezed my pee tube to a virtual closure so my bladder had to be full to bursting (which it came very close to doing) before a dribble could get passed.

The TURP in short is drilling a bigger hole through the prostate so I can now pee like a horse and go several hours without needing the loo. However it did bugger up the plumbing from the testicles a bit. After a week or so I just had to try the ejaculation stuff out. Well it responded all the sensations were there and so was that final relief satisfaction. But no ejaculation as it all back flushed up into the bladder, hey ho sex without the mess could save a fortune on boxes of tissues.

How much of an idiot was I?

Due to my own stupidity the cancer had burst out of the prostate and into the lymph nodes below so now I have been on female hormone implants for 14 months. That’s chemical castration (so no tissues required) menopausal hot flushes (still waiting for that female ability to multitask – think it is a myth). Due to start radio therapy on the 18th that’s then every day Mon-Fri for two months.

I can only blame myself for being so stupid WHO are you going to blame as some 50% of blokes will experience some form of prostate problem.

I do not want to receive any sympathy replies; I am quite capable of crying in my own beer. What I would really like is to hear that every male member has booked that blood test. Don’t be a bloody idiot.

BTW at no time did I experience (after the trip to the docs) any pain so relax it may be a tender and much loved part of you so take care of it.

The aim of Movember is to raise awareness, and I sincerely hope that this letter above does exactly that. I’m sure that you will encounter a “MoBro” or “MoSista” this month, which is great, but if you’d like to donate, please visit my Movember page and support everyone involved.

Thank you.

There are many different exercises to get a flat stomach. Some require machines or special equipment; others simply require a floor to lie on and a little motivation and determination. There are some that are performed while also exercising other groups of muscles such as in Pilates moves, where every exercise will work the stomach muscles even if the focus is the legs, arms or other area of the body.

There are a couple of movements that are very basic and yet give many people the results they are looking for. The first movement is the basic crunch. These exercises are better for the body then sit ups because they do not strain the back as much. A crunch is performed simply by lying on your back and raising the upper portion of your body a few inches off the ground, just enough to feel the strain in the stomach muscles. The key to these movements is to be sure your stomach is doing the work and not your head, or arms. Also, it is important to keep everything straight, do not lift the head more then the shoulders or back, for more information and detail on performing this movement properly there are many resources available on the internet, in books and also in videos. Another movement which is also great and should be done in conjunction with the basic crunch is a side crunch which works the oblique, or as some people call them “love handles” This exercises are performed the same way as the crunch, only the body is twisted slightly to one side. Again to get a more accurate description of how to properly perform this movement there are many resources available.

Along with working out the mid section of the stomach and sides, a person should include several different exercises to get a flat stomach by way of exercising the whole stomach, which includes the lower section and upper section of their stomach as well. It will do a person no good to only focus on one specific muscle group of their stomach. There are many places to find exercises to get a flat stomach including the internet, library, book store and in videos. With so many different options a person may have trouble deciding which exercises would benefit them the most while trying to get a flat stomach. The best suggestion in this case is to try several different ones and decide what works for the individual. One exercise may work great for one person, but be too strenuous for another. Or, one person may be in better shape and be able to do several different exercises that a beginner can not do, at least in the beginning and may just need to concentrate on one movement, instead of a series of different movements in one workout session.

While some exercises to get a flat stomach may work better then others, no exercise will work if not properly performed and done regularly. A person should decide which exercises they are both capable of doing and also can do for an extended period of time while working to get the flat stomach they want. If they exercise is too complicated, takes too much time or can only be done on a special type of equipment, the person may not be able to stick with it long term. Remember, getting a flat stomach will not happen overnight, it takes time, dedication and patience, regardless of the exercise used.

Unless you are a professional journalist or work in publicity as a job, it can often be hard to know how to set out a press release. Simply put, a press release is used to inform journalists of events or stories they may be interested in following up. Maximize your publicity by making sure you know exactly what you’re writing about. For example, are you writing a human interest story or are you seeking event publicity? Also, make sure news stories are just that – new – so they’re relevant.

The vast majority of press releases follow the same basic format, so familiarize yourself with it to keep your information clear. The first thing to list is the date, including any embargo of information. Next is your headline, followed by any photos you want to include, including a credit line to explain the picture. Follow this with the main body of text and then any further information in the form of notes to the editor. Finally, list your contact details at the end.

You need to make sure the press release catches the journalists’ attention or else they won’t run with it. Make your headline smart, short and snappy but still simple to understand so it’s possible to get a flavor of the story even without moving on. Photos are important, too: it’s true what they say – a picture is worth a thousand words, so it’s worth choosing a good one that represents your story well and conveys as much information as possible while still remaining clear.

The main part of the press release is the copy detailing all the information you want to include. You should follow the basic format of an informative introduction followed by a middle section that explores your themes and then a conclusion that ties up all the ends. Check your facts are correct and proofread carefully to check your spelling, punctuation and grammar. If you write well, the journalist may just print what you have written if they decide to run with the story.

Finally, you need to make sure you know the audience you’re writing for. Where are you hoping to get the information printed or publicized? It’s worth investigating the differences involved with writing for newspapers, radio and television to make sure you tailor your work correctly. Are you hoping the release will be seen by the general public or a specific group such as young people? If so, make sure the information is tailored to them so it’s appealing and accessible.

Most press releases have a standard format, which is useful when you’re trying to put across information in a clear and precise manner. List the date you want the information to be released (either immediately or if there is an embargo on it). Then list your headline, include any photographs (along with relevant details such as what, where and who), then follow this with the body of your text. End with any notes to the editor, such as further information for a longer story and conclude with comprehensive contact details.

Your press release needs to catch the attention of journalists if you’re going to have any hope of getting it printed. Make it eye-catching by using a good photo that embodies the story, as this often does a lot more work than the rest of the article put together. Make sure it’s clear what the photo is depicting. You also need to come up with headline that is short, snappy and smart. Make sure it’s clear what the story is about from the headline.

It’s also vital that the quality of your copy is as good as it can be. Proofread carefully to check punctuation, grammar and spelling and make sure you have all of your facts right, as if what you’ve written is good, then the journalist may just use what you have written when they print the story. Keep it short and simple, with an introduction, followed by elaboration and ending with a conclusion to round off the story. Good copy also increases the chances of your story getting noticed.

You also need to make sure you know the audience your story is meant for and think about where it will be printed or publicized. For example, if it’s meant for the general public – particularly if it’s for a specific group such as young people – then tailor the information to them so it’s appealing and accessible. Also investigate the differences in writing for television, radio and newspapers so you can tailor your copy appropriately and increase the chances of publication.

The English county of Surrey is one of the most beautiful places to experience Britain’s heritage. It is situated in the heart of Britain about thirty miles outside London. The English county of Surrey is famous for the landscape and natural beauties that capture the distinct atmosphere of old Britain. There are landscapes that have been used in many films and television serials as they are ideal for filming scenes that require traditional places as well as horror films!

County of Surrey was a place of vacation for families of the past. Many houses were built in this country side providing the peace and comfort a countryside house should have. This has played a role in forming the beautiful scenery that we see today. The county of Surrey is filled with houses and gardens that are very well preserved and are used as sights to those that visit the region in need of relaxation. There are also many waterways from where you can also visit the region as it is famous for this and attracts many tourists. Thames passes the north Surrey where the visitor can find many organized boat cruises that follow different routes and allow the visitor to see Hampton Court Palace, the scenery inspired from the 18th century and Runnymede.

Hampton Court Palace is open for visitors and offers a trip to the past. When you visit it you will slowly begin to feel like royalty and soon be lost in a dream with roots 500 years ago. You can also explore the gardens and if you are bold enough visit the maze. The English county of Surrey is also famous for Loseley Park. Queen Elisabeth I ordered the house in 1562 and as one can imagine the building as well as the whole premises are of luxurious beauty and taste. The house has now valuable paintings and furniture and is certainly worth a visit. After you have seen it you will understand why it is one of the most famous attractions in Surrey county.

Guildford is a town that is equally famous. The reason is the extraordinary beauty that is combined with modern facilities. Picturesque gardens and historic buildings are combined with excellent transportation and shopping facilities. Restaurants and bars are also a part of everyday life in Guildford. It also hosts music festivals agriculture shows, gardening festivals, different exhibitions and sport shows and of course you can expect many events and beautiful decorations during the Christmas period.

As you can see the English county of Surrey may offer history and be picturesque, but it is not limited to that. It combines beautiful landscapes with modern technology making it the ideal place to visit when you want to get away from the hectic routine, but can’t go too far. The National Trust is also located in Surrey and you can gather information from there about anything you have seen and attracted your interest. Visit the cathedral and don’t forget to take part in Bisley shooting.

If you are looking at country house weddings visit Wedding specialists Bijou Wedding Venues who offer Surrey wedding venues, as well as venues in Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain is a rich tapestry of diverse countryside, cities and cultures making it one of the finest vacation destinations in Europe. Whether you visit England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland you can be sure that, whatever your tastes, you will find plenty to keep you entertained for at least a week or two. While cities such as London and Edinburgh prove the most popular places to visit there are plenty other places which are well worth a visit and one of the most often overlooked regions in England, with regards to vacations, is the county of Surrey.

Surrey is a county situated in the South East of England less than an hour away from the nation’s capital, London. Due to the close proximity to London the county is highly popular with commuters and while this has increased the population, and the cost of living, it has, surprisingly, had little impact upon the countryside. While Surrey is often overlooked in favour of the capital, and the nearby counties of of Kent and Sussex, this is to the great advantage of the adventurous tourist.

Many visitors are attracted to England because of its rich and influential history and places like London benefit from having a huge selection of world class visitor attractions and many historic sites and buildings. While Surrey is unable to offer such prestigious tourist attractions as many other parts of England it is home to a vast range of historic buildings, many of which are of extreme importance.

Dotted across the county are numerous fascinating structures including a fine selection of windmills including Almer’s Mill, Hungry Corner Mill and Mugswell Mill. Many of the religious buildings can be dated back many centuries and even as far back as the 12th and 13th centuries. Wherever you travel in this part of England you will not get too far before you happen upon a small village or hamlet most of which feature a row of pretty old houses, a village green, the local pub and, of course, the local church. These are great places to stop for a bite to eat and it is often worth investigating the church as many feature ancient architectural delights, fascinating graves and wonderful stained glass. As well as the multitude of churches there are a number of priories which are also worth visiting. Worthy of a special mention are the remains of Waverley Abbey, the first Cistercian abbey in the UK.

If you prefer to visit more stately houses then Surrey does not fail with a huge range of historic houses and stately homes such as Clandon Park, Hatchlands Park, Loseley Park and Polesden Lacey. If, like many, you enjoy visiting English castles then you are also in luck as Surrey has a few castles of interest including the 13th-century Farnham Castle Keep and the earlier Guildford Castle Keep.

There are plenty of other things to see and do in the wonderful county of Surrey. The countryside is often breathtaking and there are a number of beautiful parks and gardens such as the Busbridge Lakes which features a variety of waterfowl and gardens. Also worth a visit are the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Royal Horticultural Society Garden at Wisley. Museums in the county include the Army Medical Services Museum and the Royal Logistic Corps Museum, as well as Guildford Museum.

One final reason for choosing to take a vacation in Surrey, mentioned earlier, is that you are within forty five minutes to an hour away from London. This allows you to base yourself in the countryside while taking daytrips to England’s most famous visitor attractions. Other places to visit near to Surrey include the popular town of Canterbury however you will find a great many places to visit in the county town of Guildford and the town of Dorking which can act as an excellent base for a vacation exploring the surrounding countryside which features such popular places as Box Hill and the North Downs.

Planning an English wedding? Why not plan you wedding in Surrey? Here’s a list of some beautiful churches, reception venues and things to do in Surrey to help get you started.

Get me to the church on time:

Surrey has some extremely beautiful churches where anyone (of Christian faith) would be lucky to get married.

The Parish Church of St James Weybridge has a sacramental window which is absolutely stunning. It is made of Victorian stained glass and depicts the sacraments of the rites of the church. The upper row has New Testament sacramental themes and then more contemporary pictures in the rows beneath.

The church of St Mary Oatlands was built in 1861 as a ‘chapel’ to serve the needs of the growing local population. It is made of stone and surrounded by beautiful greenery, including hedges and a variety of trees. Other local churches include Weybridge United Reform Church, Weybridge Methodist Church, and Christ The Prince of Peace Roman Catholic Church.

Reception:

Depending on your taste and budget, there are many reception venues for your wedding in Surrey to choose from. Silvermere Inn on the Lake offers gorgeous views, which is optimal for photographs of both the wedding party as well as guests. They also have an Island Marquee which can be tailored to individual requirements, drop down windows for full view of the lake, and private facilities for up to 200 guests.

Loseley Park is another attractive option. The 17th century Tithe Barn makes for a beautiful reception with views across the lawns and parkland.

Wotton House has a lot to offer any wedding, from its 20 acres of land, to stunning landscape architecture (once home to botanist John Evelyn), to a range of special houses and suites to entertain guests.

Burhill Golf Club is the perfect Surrey wedding venue. Tucked away in quiet woodlands is a Georgian Mansion that is beyond beautiful. The facilities can accommodate 104 and suites overlook the River Mole. Moreover there are extensive banqueting and wine menus to choose from.

Things to do in Surrey:

Of course, out-of-towners will want to entertain themselves between the church and reception. Thankfully there are many fun and educational things to do in Surrey, including going to visit the Hampton Court Palace, the RHS Wisley Gardens, or touring Thorpe Park. For those who feel the wedding is activity and excitement enough, Surrey is a wonderful place to go for bike rides or long walks.

So brides, grooms and in-laws to be, when planning an English wedding, consider Surrey. There are wonderful places to entertain and guests will have more than enough to do. And for the perfect ending, hire a hot air balloon to fly off and enjoy your first private married moments.

British School Of Ballooning provides Hot Air Balloon Flights throughout the south of England. Hot Air Ballooning is the perfect way to enjoy the scenery in the Home Counties.

If you are thinking of moving to Surrey then take a look at Barton Wyatt as they have the best selection of Surrey homes available on the market today. Whether you want to live in Virginia Water, in Wallington, Epsom or Guildford, there is a Surrey home to suit you. The type of property that you will find will depend very much on which estate agent you choose. Not every agent has a full list of Surrey properties and so it pays to shop around and find the right estate agent for your needs.

There is a wide choice of properties available for anyone looking for a house for sale in Surrey whether you want a nineteen thirties semi, a refurbished Victorian terrace, or something a bit more up market. When you are house hunting there are a number of factors that you need to bear in mind, including the local schools (if you have children) and the shopping and leisure facilities. While public transport is quite good in many parts of Surrey, if you choose a property that is more off the beaten track you may well need your own transport. Some parts of Surrey are very pretty, great to stroll around or to go for an afternoon drive, which is why many people are on the look out of houses for sale in Surrey.

When you start your search for houses for sale in Surrey, you’ll find that most of them will have the kind of curb appeal that is hard to find in other areas, Surrey residents generally take care of their gardens and the outside of their properties. You will probably have a fixed budget, particularly under the present economic circumstances so it makes sense to find yourself an estate agent who will do their best to get you a good price.

Find an estate agent like Barton Wyatt, which has an extensive list of houses for sale in Surrey, whether you are looking for a seven bedroom mansion or three bedroom semi. Some parts of Surrey are more popular than others because of the transport links into central London, you can be in Waterloo in half an hour or so. Proximity to shops and transport may not be a priority for you, but for many people getting the train into work is preferable than all the messing about with cars in central London.

One thing that you won’t need to worry about too much when you are looking for a house for sale in Surrey is crime. Most of Surrey is quite safe and because the majority of homes are owner occupied that there is a lot less vandalism than there might be in inner city areas.

If you live in or near London and are thinking about moving in the near future, then it is well worth taking a look at houses for sale in Surrey.

Surrey is the perfect place for a beautiful, modern and romantic wedding. It can provide everything from the small exclusive, intimate venue up to the big stylish weddings which are much larger and grander.

Surrey hotels and country houses are all well connected with major rail and road routes into London and the South East of England. Heathrow and Gatwick airports are very close and major roads such as the A3, M3 and the M25 get your guests to the venue quickly and efficiently. Rail travellers are equally well supported due to the large number of commuters living in Surrey but working in Central London. Trains travel regularly into London Bridge and Waterloo stations.

The general quality of service in all of the wedding venues in Surrey is extremely high, with excellent cuisine, exemplary service and amazing attention to even the smallest detail. Brides (and grooms) will be spoilt for choice and their wedding guests will be impressed.

In order to see everything that Surrey has to offer you will need to visit the venue and talk to the staff, but review your budget first as there is a wide price variation between the different options. Be clear on the number of guests that will be attending and the style of catering that you will require. The clearer you can be in your list of requirements the easier it will be to make your choice.

Photography is important to every bride and Surrey provides some stunning locations for the perfect wedding photograph. Make sure that your wedding photographer is familiar with the venue that you choose so that they are able to get the most out of the location.

Spas are becoming increasingly common at the larger wedding venues in Surrey and are very popular with the brides as a place to relax in the hectic build up to the wedding, remember to ask about spa facilities when making your booking.
